Forging industry executives and technical experts from around the world recently gathered in Cleveland, Ohio’s new Convention Center for three days of technical papers and exhibits.

Servo press technology, long-used in the forming of sheet metal, has a future in the forging industry. The energy consumption per production stroke of a servo press is lower than that of a conventional press. Schuler’s Servo-Direct Technology (SDT) presses have been used in forging operations with favorable results.

Ohio’s T&W Forge, part of SIFCO Industries since 2010, is a supplier of alloy, carbon and stainless steel parts to its industrial customers. 

Rotary forging is a cold-forming process invented by Edwin Elmer Slick in 1914. Slick Mills were used to form circular products such as railroad wheels and tire molds. More recently, research to further the process is being conducted at the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) in Glasgow, Scotland.

Press manufacturer Schuler received an order, the largest ever by its forging division, from Istanbul-based Parsan Steel Forging and Machining Co. to build what would be one of the most modern forging lines in Europe.

The Timken Company recently invested $35 million in a new in-line forging press to improve its products.
