Mosdorfer GmbH, a manufacturer of fittings for high-voltage overhead lines, ordered two screw presses and five C-frame presses from Schuler. According to Schuler, its screw presses with ServoDirect technology are the ideal solution for Mosdorfer’s new forge in Weiz, Austria. The press models have 2,100 and 1,100 tons of press force. Thanks to the servo motors, the screw presses have a lower design and offer improved drive controllability and higher starting torques with shortened stroke cycle times. The closed water-cooling circuit for the servo motors results in optimized temperature stability of the drive system independent of operational air conditions.
Schuler installed two forging lines, including the dies and furnaces, in China. The screw press and the crank press forge aluminum chassis parts fully automatically. Screw presses from Schuler feature a press force of 250-28,000 tons. The water-cooled servo direct drive transmits the torque of the motor without losses and offers a high level of precision, operational reliability and economy. The 750- to 16,000-ton crank press is suited for mass production. Depending on the specific requirements, the press frame and drive system are designed for high manufacturing precision and high production rates.
Germany’s Kaiser Aluminium-Umformtechnik GmbH, a manufacturer of forged-aluminum components for small- and medium-sized products, successfully started up its first Schuler servo screw press. The system will be primarily used to produce complex chassis components for the automotive industry. The investment further expands Kaiser Aluminium-Umformtechnik’s market position as a competent partner for forged parts and components in the aluminum sector.
The Ellwood Closed Die Group (ECDG) is launching a new product line for Seakeeper. The line includes finish-machined flywheels that are assembled into gyro stabilizers, which, according to Seakeeper, cut down “95% of all boat roll, the rocking motion that causes sea sickness, anxiety and fatigue.” Ellwood Texas Forge Navasota (ETFN) will use the entire Ellwood Group supply chain to manufacture the flywheels from start to finish.
This article examines the application of screw presses for forging operations. An overview of screw presses and typical applications are discussed first, followed by the physics of their operation. Simulations are used to illustrate these various aspects, which cannot be directly observed during production. Other features and characteristics, which are important for the proper use and operation of screw presses, are also described.
