Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd. (SFIL) won a casting contract worth approximately $1.4 million from Ajax-Ceco, a U.S.-based press manufacturer. It will require 550 tons of liquid steel to cast the press frame, which will measure almost 13 meters in length, 3.5 meters wide and 3.2 meters deep. Completion of the project, including final machining, is expected by early 2017. When poured, the frame will take several weeks to cool before it can be lifted from the pit and undergo heat treatment and machining work. The frame will be part of an expansion to Southwest Steel Processing’s forging plant in Newport, Ark.
Michael Holloway, senior sales manager at SFIL, said, “Winning the Ajax-Ceco casting contract against strong overseas competition and harsh market conditions is purely down to our quality and technical manufacturing skills. We put a considerable body of work into modeling the casting ahead of a visit from the customer, and this threw up some design modifications that were beneficial."
Southwest Steel Processing is a 75%-25% joint venture between Park Ohio Industries (Cleveland, Ohio) and Arkansas Steel Associates (Newport, Ark.).
