Fires broke out at Ellwood City Forge (ECF) in Ellwood City, Pa., and at Dayton Forging and Heat Treating (DFHT) in Dayton, Ohio, during the second week of November. No one was injured at either incident. The fire at ECF, which caused about $250,000 damage, occurred in a basement area where hydraulic pumps are located. The area was monitored by video and an alert employee noticed the flames and cut fuel and power to the pumps, an action that limited the fire’s spread. The cause is under investigation.
The fire at DFHT reportedly involved a furnace malfunction and occurred shortly after midnight during a quench cycle. The exact cause of the fire is undetermined, but the furnace caught fire and the fire spread to the building’s roof. All employees safely evacuated the building.
