International Crankshaft Inc. (ICI) of Georgetown, Ky., will invest approximately $46 million to add a new forging-press line, the fourth, to its manufacturing operations. ICI, a joint venture of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. and Sumitomo Corp., forges crankshafts in the U.S. The company is currently running its three production lines at full capacity in response to healthy North American demand, producing 2.7 million crankshafts annually. Production is expected to reach 4 million units per year with the addition of the fourth line, which is scheduled to start up in November 2015. According to ICI, automakers are shifting to forged crankshafts from cast ones in an effort to meet higher fuel-efficiency requirements.
