Bay Forge, the Indian subsidiary of Italy's Fomas Group, is expanding its business of producing open-die forgings and seamless rolled rings for applications in sectors such as aerospace, thermal and nuclear power generation, oil and gas, and defense. The Chennai-based company recently opened a new plant in India’s Kanchipuram district. The new facility contains a 2,000-metric-ton forging press that will augment the company's capacity for open-die forgings and a 3,500-metric-ton press that will be used to make larger forgings and rings. Bay Forge has a 19-year sole supplier contract with Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, its most prestigious client, and counts Siemens, Alstom Power and Toshiba among its other customers.

Bay Forge has also acquired an additional 50 acres of land at Palayanoor in Chennai. The company intends to reach an overall capacity of 14,000 tons there in 2009, with plans to almost double open-die forging and ring capacities. Bay Forge has an in-house laboratory that facilitates quality-control tests to meet international quality norms. Its ring-rolling mill is able to roll out rings 5.5 meters in diameter and 20 metric tons.
